Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 3 in D Major, Op. 29, was written in 1875. He started it at the estate of Vladimir Shilovsky in Ussovo on June 5 and finished it on August 1 in Recruiting. Dedicated to Shilovsky, the work is unique in Tchaikovsky’s symphonic work in two respects: it is the only one of his seven symphonies (including Manfred’s unnumbered symphony) in a major key; and it is the only symphony containing five movements (the additional movement of Alla Tedeschi occurs between the opening movement and the slow movement).

The symphony was premiered in Moscow on November 19, 1875 under the baton of Nikolai Rubinstein at the first concert of the season of the Russian Musical Society. The premiere in St. Petersburg took place on January 24, 1876 under the direction of Eduard Napravnik. His first performance outside of Russia took place on February 8, 1879 at a concert of the New York Philharmonic Society.

His first performance in the United Kingdom took place at the Crystal Palace in 1899 under the baton of Sir Augustus Manns, who apparently was the first to call it the “Polish Symphony”, referring to the repeated Polish dance rhythms that stand out in the final movement of the symphony.

Symphony No. 3, recorded in 1967, is performed by the USSR State Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Yevgeny Svetlanov and is considered one of the best publicly available recordings. Previously released as a vinyl record and CD, it is now also available on magnetic tape. This edition was prepared and released using the original master tapes from the archives of the “Melody Company”.
